Adopting locally
Filipino animal shelters have wonderful dogs and cats. Best options:
- Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS): Manila
- CARA Welfare Philippines: Makati
- Cebu Cat Society: Cebu
Adoption fee: ₱500-2,000 (covers vaccination and neutering).
Bringing pets from abroad
Requirements:
- Health certificate from your country (within 10 days of travel)
- Rabies vaccination (within 12 months). Import permit from Bureau of Animal Industry
- Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)
Cost: ₱5,000-15,000 total for documentation.
Veterinary care
- Animal House (Manila): Good general vet, ₱500-1,000 consultation
- Cebu Vet: Excellent in Cebu, English-speaking staff
- Vet clinics in Dumaguete: Basic but adequate
Philippine Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485)
- It is illegal to abandon pets
- Stray dogs cannot be killed arbitrarily
- Dog fighting is a serious crime
- Report animal abuse to local authorities or PAWS
Tips
- Street dogs (askals) make wonderful pets — many are already neutered
- Vaccinate against rabies — it is mandatory and the disease exists in the Philippines
- Keep cats indoors — dogs roam freely but cats face traffic danger
- Pet insurance is not widely available yet
