Siargao vs Cebu: Which Island Is Better for Living?

Both islands appear in every "best Philippine island" list, but they answer very different questions. Cebu is a province with a metropolis in it; Siargao is a small surf island that went viral. If you are choosing where to live for months, the differences compound fast.

Cost of living

• Siargao (General Luna): boomtown pricing. Accommodation that cost ₱8,000/month in 2019 now asks ₱20,000-35,000 for anything with aircon and reliable Wi-Fi. Food imports make groceries 20-40% pricier than Cebu.
• Cebu: metro Cebu runs ₱18,000-30,000 for a proper one-bedroom condo; Moalboal or the south coast run ₱10,000-18,000. Groceries, gyms and services at Manila-adjacent prices minus Manila chaos.

Cebu wins on cost, and it is not close — unless you want to live in a surf town, in which case you are paying for that.

Internet and work

Siargao improved after Typhoon Odette (2021) wrecked everything, but video-call reliability still depends on your corner of General Luna and your backup SIM. Fiber exists along Tourism Road; brownouts are routine.

Cebu City and Mactan have real fiber, redundant routes and coworking spaces with generators. If your income depends on calls, this is decisive: Cebu for work-first, Siargao for work-flexible.

Community

• Siargao: small, intense, surf-anchored. You will know everyone in two weeks. Excellent for single travelers and couples; some couples and families find it small by month three. The social scene is bar-and-surf-centric and skews younger.
• Cebu: layered. IT Park nomads, lahug families, dive communities in Moalboal, Spanish and Korean expat circles, business networks. If you want your community to outlast your honeymoon phase with the island, Cebu offers more runway.

Healthcare and practicalities

Cebu has major private hospitals (Chong Hua, Cebu Doctors, Perpetual Succour), international flights, a domestic hub with direct flights everywhere, and every service a long-stay life needs: visa agents, dentists, vets, specialty groceries.

Siargao has a district hospital and clinics; serious issues mean a medical evacuation flight to Cebu or Surigao. Flights to Siargao route through Cebu or Manila and fill up (and spike in price) in peak season. Everything is harder in the rainy months when flights cancel.

Lifestyle

• Siargao: rhythm of tides and swells. Motorbike, board shorts, sunset at Cloud 9, Sunday sessions. Magical for 3-6 months if the ocean is your thing. The island is one road deep in most places — what you see in week two is most of it.
• Cebu: city plus nature. You can work a full week, dive weekends in Moalboal, hike in the highlands, watch films in a mall, and still have the rest of the Philippines one ferry away.

The verdict

• Choose Cebu if: you work online with fixed hours, want healthcare and services within reach, plan to stay 6+ months, or you travel constantly and need a hub.
• Choose Siargao if: you surf or want to learn, your schedule flexes around weather, you are staying 1-6 months, and you accept that convenience costs double.

A common path: start in Cebu for stability, then do a Siargao season once your remote setup is proven. Few people regret starting in Cebu; several regret starting in Siargao during a storm month with a deadline and no internet.
